Japan 2024

From the moment I stepped onto the Narita Express, travelling felt seamless—clean stations, punctual trains, and clear signage made navigating a huge city surprisingly easy. Moving between neighbourhoods on the subway was an experience in itself, each stop revealing a different side of Tokyo, from neon-lit streets to quiet residential pockets.

After a few days in the capital, I boarded the Shinkansen to Kyoto, gliding past cities and countryside at incredible speed. The train ride was smooth and almost meditative, with views of Mount Fuji briefly appearing through the window. Kyoto felt like a contrast to Tokyo—calmer, more traditional, and deeply connected to Japan’s history. Walking through narrow streets lined with wooden buildings and temples felt like stepping back in time.

Exploring Kyoto’s temples and shrines was a highlight of the journey. From the iconic torii gates of Fushimi Inari to the peaceful gardens of Kinkaku-ji, each place offered a different atmosphere and sense of meaning. Despite their popularity, many spots still felt serene, especially in the early mornings. The attention to detail in architecture, landscaping, and rituals reflected a deep respect for tradition and balance.

The positives of the trip went far beyond the landmarks. The food was exceptional—from casual ramen bars to beautifully presented bento meals—while the hospitality was consistently warm and respectful. Japan felt incredibly safe, easy to travel, and thoughtfully designed for visitors. It was a country that blended modern life and ancient culture effortlessly, leaving a lasting impression and a strong desire to return.
